Metaphor has been used by many great teachers to convey messages that are not so easily distilled or linear. It has dimensions and shape. There are many levels and much depth. It is also easily grasped at the surface level. It evades gross generalizations and easy judgments.
Telling your own story is something that can be both very vulnerable and very empowering. Many of us have only had our story told to us by others, in their voices and from their perspectives. It may feel risky and adventurous to dare to tell our story from our perspective, but really, it is the only perspective that truly makes it all make sense. We are the only ones who have access to all that is in us.
I have shared my true story metaphor here for many reasons. I hope that it may shine light on some of your own experiences with sensitivity and create more options for us to understand ourselves and work with ourselves. I hope that you will consider doing the same. I believe that as we have more stories in the world told from the perspective of each of us as the leading character in our lives, we give ourselves more room to be. And perhaps like me, metaphor may be a more suiting way to share the subtlety that is your life.
I have created a recording for you below to guide you in discovering your own story. Whether you decide to share it publicly or not, I hope that you will tell your story for you. Speaking your life to yourself from the perspective of seeing it from your eyes is a truly validating and healing experience.
I have used the help of some friends and artists to use music, water color, video, and to actually produce it into a physical book. I encourage you to share your story in whatever medium is most relevant. It does not have to look at all like my story, and very well may not. You can use sound, visuals, drawing, painting, photography, design, collage, and all kinds of materials. It can be something you produce in an afternoon or over the period of a year. However you do it, I hope you do it for you first and foremost. And then, I hope you will consider sharing it, also for you. In that way it becomes for all of us. I would love to see many stories shared here.
If you would like to share your true story metaphor here and have it posted on this blog, please contact me here with an outline of how you envision your story being shared and a timeline for that. You will get a response within a week or two to create the experience of sharing your story that honors all. If you would like to remain anonymous, that is ok, and it also can be a great way to share your self with others in your life by naming and sharing your story.
You also get the opportunity to win a scholarship to the next available Free Bird Apprenticeship cohort by submitting your story. So if you would like an opportunity to work with the author and other subtle giants who are learning to go where they are called and shine, to experience freedom to be who they are and live their lives, then all you have to do is share your story here.
Thank you for listening to my true story metaphor, and now here is a guide for you to consider your own ::
